Paralegal Spotlight: Yeelen Fomété

In the spotlight today we have Yeelen Fomété. We were thrilled to have a chat with Yeelen about his experience getting work through Flex Legal. Yeelen was given the sensational opportunity to work with Magic Circle Law firm, Freshfields. Here’s what he has to say about his experience...

Hi Yeelen! Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?

My name is Yeelen Fomété I’m a 23-year-old Cameroonian American paralegal, and aspiring solicitor. I’ve had the immense privilege of being raised in six countries (US, Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, The Netherlands, and England), and I feel that this exposure to such varied people and cultural practices at a young age made me develop an appreciation for, and ability to, build strong, lasting relationships with colleagues and clients from diverse backgrounds.

Having moved to Manchester for university as an 18 year-old I’ve remained in the city since, and have enjoyed the process of a developing both as an individual and legal professional in this city.

How did you first become interested in working in law?

Having been raised in the United States, Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, and the Netherlands before moving to the UK, I had the privilege of witnessing the universal ability of law to be a force for change. Proximity to organizations such as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Court of Justice, furnished an internal appreciation for law's capacity to bring forward resolutions for pressing world issues.

My passion for commercial law took root during my university years, where I actively engaged in legal events and gained practical experience. Attending an introductory commercial law session hosted by my university's law society in my first year was a pivotal moment. Given my international background and interests, the prospect of engaging in multi-jurisdictional work and international opportunities fuelled my aspirations to pursue a career as a commercial solicitor.

Could you tell us about your experience of working through Flex Legal?

My tenure with Flex Legal has been remarkably positive. It was through Flex that I landed my first legal work opportunity at Freshfields while completing my third year of undergraduate studies. Over the past two years as a Flex candidate, I've consistently received unwavering support and genuine warmth from the Flex team whenever I've approached them with questions or concerns.

Where are you currently working?

I’m currently working at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, marking my third assignment at the firm through Flex.

I’ve really appreciated the diversity of the work that’s been put in front of me in my current role. As a strong believer of first-hand experience being the most effective teacher, I feel that this exposure to various practice areas has been fantastic for my development as a lawyer.

What advice would you give to those looking to get into paralegal work?

For those embarking on a journey into paralegal work, I strongly recommend fostering a positive attitude, embracing an open mind, and nurturing a growth mindset. While the tasks may sometimes seem administrative, it's crucial for aspiring paralegals to acknowledge the significance of their role in the broader legal landscape. Take the time to understand how each task contributes to your growth and development toward becoming a proficient solicitor, be respectful and affable with everybody you meet, and you’ll do great.

What sets Flex Legal apart is their unwavering support system and even after joining a role, the team maintains regular communication.
