How Marciano advanced his legal career through interim work

Marciano has been working as an interim paralegal through Flex Legal since October 2020. During that time he’s worked at a range of law firms, from Freshfields to his current placement at Shearman and Sterling, and has made an incredible impression wherever he’s worked. We’re so proud of the fantastic work Marciano has carried out whilst at Flex, and feel very happy to have been able to support him on his legal journey. We had a quick chat with Marciano to discuss his journey so far, and to see what advice he'd give to any other aspiring legal professionals.
Hi Marciano! How have you found the experience of working through Flex Legal?
I found Flex Legal’s website whilst researching for opportunities to work flexibly as a paralegal. I was just finishing my Masters degree at the time and was unsure about the next steps to take in my legal career. Since joining Flex Legal, I have been acquiring many important skills, improving my confidence as a legal professional, and collecting great experiences and memorable moments.What skills have you gained and developed whilst working through Flex?
I have developed several skills whilst working through Flex Legal. For instance, my ability to work as part of a team improved considerably due to the fact that I have been privileged enough to work at various law firms, practice areas and with different teams.Moreover, through working on different projects and cases, I developed several new ways to evolve my critical thinking and problem solving skills, by researching very complex topics with strict deadlines, and completing all the tasks required in a quick and efficient manner.

What has been the highlight/your favourite project while working on a placement with us?
The highlight for me was when I had the unique opportunity to travel to Manchester to assist at Freshfields as a paralegal. I spent about a month working with a great team at the firm’s office, and also managed to find time (weekends) to discover a place I knew very little about, but learned a great deal about the people, culture and the history of the city.How has working with us helped to progress your legal career?
I never wanted to rush my development in the legal profession. Therefore, finding Flex Legal was a perfect match for me because it gave me the confidence and opportunity to work at some of the best law firms in the world, learn significantly about the legal profession, while at the same time working on some very interesting matters, and with such diverse and ambitious group of legal professionals.“Finding Flex Legal was a perfect match for me because it gave me the confidence and opportunity to work at some of the best law firms in the world.”

Lastly, what do you think are the most important attributes for an aspiring lawyer to have?
Discipline and perseverance. These are for me the most important attributes an aspiring lawyer should start developing from the early stages of her/his career. I think that no matter how talented an individual is, without the necessary work ethic, organisation and planning of one’s short-term goals and commitments, the journey can become very challenging. Simply put, rejections are part of the journey and many doors will be shut along the way, but those that persist, stay focused, and do not give up, shall always find the keys to open them, one way or another.Additional Resources:
