In the spotlight today, we have Devon, a driven and insightful paralegal who has been steadily carving out her path in the legal world. We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Devon about her journey, her experiences with Flex Legal, and her advice for aspiring legal professionals.

Hi Devon! Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?

My name is Devon, and I currently work as a Competition Paralegal at Stewarts.

My journey into law wasn’t straightforward; it began during a gap year when I started exploring my interest in the field by undertaking court marshalling and mini-pupillages. I was captivated by the way barristers conducted themselves and the intricacies of the sentencing process, which solidified my decision to pursue a legal career. My fascination with the barristers naturally drew me to the Bar, leading me to study a two-year integrated LLM with the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

While many of my friends had already mapped out their career paths by this stage, I took the time to explore different avenues, and in the end, it paid off. Looking back, it feels like everything happened for a reason, leading me to Stewarts, where I was meant to be.

Could you tell us about your experience of working through Flex Legal?

I was drawn to Flex Legal because I wanted to explore different areas of private practice, and they offered the perfect platform for that. Through Flex, I gained valuable insights into client services and the pre-legal side of the profession, which helped me build strong communication skills that were essential in preparing me for my current role. Flex Legal made the entire process seamless and supportive. Their application process was straightforward, and the research template they provided proved incredibly helpful for interview preparation.

During my placement at DWF as a Collection Specialist, I worked closely with the Debt Recovery Team in Leeds, engaging in both legal and administrative tasks. I was responsible for making outbound calls, responding to emails and written correspondence, and discussing outstanding debts with clients.  This role was especially beneficial for me as an aspiring legal professional, as it provided hands-on experience in the practical aspects of law, particularly in debt recovery. I also learned how to balance my individual workload while collaborating with the team. The experience also helped me to develop the resilience and resourcefulness needed to excel in a fast-paced legal environment.

Throughout my placement, the team at Flex was incredibly supportive. They regularly followed up with me, answered all my questions, and made sure I felt comfortable in my role. I had many queries, and Nurun always responded promptly, which really highlights the exceptional support Flex Legal provides.

Could you tell us about your current role at Stewarts and what you find most interesting about it?

In my current role at Stewarts, a lot of my day-to-day work revolves around research. Unlike some roles where work naturally comes your way, I’ve found that in this position, you have to actively seek out potential clients and cases, often by conducting in-depth market analysis and staying informed on industry trends. I keep a close eye on what’s happening in the U.S., as legal developments there can often inspire similar cases here in the UK. Alongside research, I assist with various administrative tasks, such as organising meetings and managing files, which helps keep everything running smoothly.

What I find most interesting about my role at Stewarts is working in competition law, which was a new area for me. I’m involved in high-profile, long-term cases that deal with global companies. I think competition law is fascinating because of its direct impact on the economic sector, which also makes the work feel particularly relevant and impactful. Every day presents new challenges and learning opportunities, and I’m excited to continue growing in this dynamic field at Stewarts.

What’s next for you?

I’m very happy at Stewarts and plan to stay here for the foreseeable future, focusing on building my legal knowledge. Whether I eventually choose the barrister or solicitor route, I know this experience will provide me with a strong foundation and guide my future career decisions.

What advice would you give to those looking to get into paralegal work?

For anyone looking to break into paralegal work, my biggest piece of advice is to be enthusiastic and curious. Always ask loads of useful questions, as this will not only deepen your understanding but also show your genuine interest in the field. Make the most of the support around you—people are often more than willing to help if you reach out. It’s also important to gain as much experience as possible, whether it’s paid or unpaid. Each opportunity, no matter how small, will add to your skillset and make you a more well-rounded legal professional. Finally, enjoy what you do. Finding an area of law and a workplace culture that resonates with you can make all the difference in your career satisfaction and success.

Flex Legal made the entire process seamless and supportive.
