Paralegal Spotlight: Daniyal Basharat
Case Studies
Louise Anderson
We absolutely love shining a spotlight on our stand-out paralegals. This time, we were delighted to have a chat with Daniyal, a multilingual LLB Law Graduate, who has worked on multiple Flex placements, from Huel to Freshfields. After flourishing on three continuous placements at Summize, Daniyal has continued to shine in his work with every client since. Here’s what he has to say about working through Flex Legal…
Hi Daniyal! Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?
Hi! I did LLB Law at The University of Manchester, and graduated in 2022. Before studying law, I graduated in 2019 from an undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from METU Ankara, Turkey. Before that I was living in Pakistan. How did you first become interested in working in law?
I discovered my interest in law, specifically commercial law, during a summer internship at a biomedical design R&D firm in Turkey where I realised that I was more interested in exploring how the firm could navigate the crisis in the wake of a steep drop in the value of Turkish lira and grapple with the challenges of increasing regulations and cash flow issues. As I explored the aftermath of the currency crisis, I learnt that it had a catastrophic impact on banks that had borrowed foreign currency but kept and lent it in Turkish lira. Learning about issues like these and seeing their impact on numerous businesses made me want to work with businesses in dealing with their most crucial challenges. I felt working as a lawyer would be a good way for me to do that, and make the most of my personal interests and qualities.Could you tell us about your experience of working through Flex Legal?
Working through Flex Legal has been great. I had a swift and smooth onboarding. When I was in my final semester at the university, a paralegal role at Summize came up where working hours were flexible around my university timetable. I started working there and have had three placements at Summize since then. Working through Flex has given me exposure to a variety of organisations, such as Huel and Freshfields, in a small frame of time. It has been great to see different workplace cultures and meet some incredibly nice people.“Working through Flex Legal has given me exposure to a variety of organisations, such as Huel and Freshfields, in a small frame of time. Daniyal, Flex Paralegal
Where are you currently working?
I am currently working as a Legal Engineer at SYKE, a legal technology consultancy. Being a contractor with SYKE gives me the flexibility to choose the paralegal roles with Flex that best suit my schedule. I just finished in my role with Summize that I got through Flex. At Summize, I was implementing the Summize Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) tool for some of their clients. This involved reviewing different types of contracts and checking that key clauses are correctly identified and summarised by the Summize CLM tool, which leverages cutting edge AI. I have also configured templates for contract automation by the Summize tool. What have you found most interesting about your recent role?
Implementing legal technology for different clients has allowed me to learn more about how those businesses and their legal teams operate. Reviewing different types of contracts for a variety of businesses has been really interesting because I get to have a look at different business models, learn about ways that businesses use to protect their interests, and pick up on fine details that have been negotiated and drafted in the contracts. As a generally curious person, I really enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about all these things. What advice would you give to those looking to get into paralegal work?
Don’t underestimate yourself and dive right in! Seek as many opportunities as you can and try to have a broad range of interests so that you maximise your chances of learning at the early stage of your career. This will also help you distil down to what you actually enjoy working on. Additionally, if there is something you want to learn more about or get involved in, don’t be afraid to ask questions and register your interest.“Don’t underestimate yourself and dive right in!
