Why Flex Co-Sec

What is a Company Secretary?

A group of young aspiring lawyers with 8 fingers up to signify eighth cohort with a screen behind saying 'Welcome to Flex'

The role of the CoSec is on the rise. But what is a Company Secretary? Who can follow this career path? And how can you become one through Flex Legal?

A Company Secretary, or Governance Officer, plays a critical role in advising boards on corporate governance and managing administrative responsibilities, from preparing board meetings to overseeing HR. The role requires flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to manage various projects. Despite being less well-known, this route offers rapid career progression, exposure to senior leaders, and competitive salaries.

Flex Co-Sec provides you with an industry-leading way of breaking into this career path, by placing you within a co-sec team for a minimum of 18 months, access to complete Part 1 of the CGI examinations, and ongoing mentoring and support throughout the scheme.

Entry requirements

Who we're looking for

Flex Trainees from across multiple cohorts are seated on the central staircase of Gowling WLG's London offices. They are smiling, some are even laughing. All in all it's a very pleasant and warming scene.

We are incredibly keen to help as many aspiring company secretaries to break into the industry as we can, but we do still have minimum entry criteria. Here's a quick run-down:

  • A minimum 2:1 degree in Law, Business Business Studies or Business Management, Accounting, or a related field.
  • You must meet our social mobility criteria, which is designed to support aspiring professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • A strong and demonstrable commitment to completing the Corporate Governance Institute exams and qualifying as a Governance professional.
  • Successful candidates will be required to demonstrate their right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide visa sponsorship at this time.
